Donald Trump has taken a new measure to strengthen security at the southern border of the United States. According to his spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, the president signed an executive order to send an additional 1,500 troops to the area.
“He signed an executive order to send an additional 1,500 troops to the southern border of the United States,” confirmed Leavitt from the White House.
This decision adds to other actions aimed at tightening immigration policies and enhancing security in the region, as established by several executive orders recently signed by Trump.
Military Reinforcement at the Border
The new soldiers will join the approximately 2,500 troops from the National Guard and Reserve already stationed at the border. This is not the first time Trump has taken such measures. During his first term, he deployed more than 7,000 soldiers to Texas, Arizona, and California in 2018 when a caravan of migrants was heading toward the United States.
Stricter Immigration Policies
Trump, now the 47th President of the United States after being sworn in in Washington, D.C., has signed several executive orders focused on border security. These include:
- Declaring a national emergency at the southern border.
- Deporting migrants with criminal records.
- Restoring the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed.
In addition, the president has authorized immigration raids in places previously considered “protected,” such as schools, churches, and hospitals, to locate undocumented individuals.
New Directives from the Department of Homeland Security
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, also issued two new directives related to border security:
- End of protected zones: The policy from the previous administration that limited arrests in “sensitive” zones has been overturned. Immigration agents can now act without requiring special approval.
- Review of humanitarian parole: Programs that do not comply with immigration laws will be eliminated, and cases will be evaluated on an individual basis.
ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Customs and Border Protection) will implement these measures to strengthen control at the southern border. According to Huffman, these actions aim to “protect Americans.”
This military reinforcement and the new policies reflect President Trump’s approach to immigration and national security, marking a significant shift from the previous administration.
