Claudia Sheinbaum to Trump: North American Unity is Essential to Counter Asia

In an emotional speech marking the first 100 days of her administration, Claudia Sheinbaum sent a direct message to Donald Trump, stating that the relationship between Mexico and the United States must be based on respect and dialogue. The Mexican president expressed confidence that this relationship will be positive, despite the tensions arising from the new U.S. president’s policies.

The Importance of North American Unity

Sheinbaum took the opportunity to address a key issue: the need for North American countries to work together to counteract Asia’s economic power. In her speech, she reminded that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), signed during Trump’s first term, has been beneficial for the three nations, creating jobs and strengthening their economies.

Additionally, she mentioned that Mexican migrants are a crucial source of economic support for the United States, sending more than 65 billion dollars a year to their families in Mexico, which represents only a small part of what they truly contribute in terms of consumption, savings, and taxes on U.S. soil. Sheinbaum emphasized how these contributions show the positive impact of migration on the U.S. economy.

Mexico is a Sovereign Nation

In a firm tone, the president reaffirmed Mexico’s sovereignty in the face of pressure from its northern neighbor.

“We will always hold our heads high. Mexico is a free, independent, and sovereign country,” said Sheinbaum

By expressing this sentiment, the president made it clear that Mexico will not subordinate itself to the decisions of other countries, although it will collaborate when necessary.

During her speech, Sheinbaum took the opportunity to respond to criticisms from former president Ernesto Zedillo, who had called Mexico a country that had lost its democratic status. The president reminded that the real authoritarianism took place during his administration when Zedillo appointed judges by decree.

“We are democrats,” Sheinbaum said, defending her government’s democratic process.

Finally, the president closed her speech with a message to the new president of the United States, Donald Trump.

“Our proposal is to seek the economic integration of the entire American continent“

She also emphasized that North American unity is key to facing global competition, particularly from Asia. Sheinbaum highlighted that this integration must be done with respect for the sovereignty of each country.
