Edmundo González Calls for ‘More Pressure’ Against Maduro’s Government

The Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia requested this Friday from the international community to increase pressure on the government of Nicolás Maduro with the aim of achieving a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela.

Discussions About Venezuela in Washington

In an interview with Eric Farmsworth, González, former ambassador and current opposition leader, mentioned that during his meeting with former president Joe Biden, they discussed the need to exert “greater pressure” on Maduro’s regime to achieve political change in the country.

“Pressure, more pressure from the international community, is the only language the Maduro regime understands. This is key to achieving a political outcome,” González told the vice president of the Council of the Americas (AS/COA). He also mentioned that he is organizing a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address the situation in Venezuela and make a public statement about it.

Change in U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Venezuela

González confessed that he used to think Venezuela was not a priority in U.S. foreign policy. However, after several meetings in Washington, he feels things are changing. “Now I feel that Venezuela has become a more important issue. I believe they are more interested in finding a solution to the crisis,” he said.

The Impact of the Crisis in Venezuela

After Nicolás Maduro’s swearing-in, González warned that Venezuelan migration could increase massively if the results of the July 28 elections, in which he claims the opposition won, are not recognized. “The people are tired of chavista policies. If the regime does not change, migration will continue to grow,” he explained.

The politician pointed out that several Latin American governments have expressed concern about this possible new migration wave. According to González, the countries in the region are not in a position to deal with the high costs of humanitarian aid. “We have spoken with leaders and representatives from Latin America. They agree that they could not sustain a new migration crisis,” he emphasized.

Upcoming Visit to Ecuador

The Presidency of Ecuador confirmed that on Monday, January 27, González will visit the country to meet with President Daniel Noboa. According to an official statement, the agenda will also include a meeting with the Venezuelan community in Ecuador.

“Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to democracy and the values that sustain it,” expressed the Ecuadorian government, reiterating its rejection of Nicolás Maduro’s government.
