Florida is experiencing one of the strongest cold waves in the last 70 years. In several parts of the state, especially in the north, significant snowfall has occurred, while temperatures have dropped to extremely low levels. This has caused major issues in a place that is usually known for its warm and sunny weather. The snowstorms and freezing temperatures have affected both mobility and power supply in different areas.
Where Has Snow Fallen in Florida?
The heaviest snowfalls have been recorded in the Panhandle, where cities like Pensacola received 7.6 cm of snow, a quantity not seen since 1954. In Tallahassee, the state capital, over 5 cm of snow have accumulated, mixed with freezing rain. This phenomenon has caused major complications on the roads, especially on Interstate 10, which connects many major cities. In places like Lake City, Macclenny, and Waycross, ice accumulations have made travel difficult, creating risks for drivers.
Although the northern part of Florida has seen the most snow, other areas in the central region have also recorded unusually low temperatures and some freezing rain, which is very rare for this area.
What Measures Have Been Taken to Handle the Extreme Weather?
Due to the severity of the situation, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in northern Florida. In his statement, he urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions due to the extremely cold temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that the wind chill in the north could reach -24°C, increasing the risk of skin frostbite if exposed for too long.
Temporary shelters have been opened in cities like Tallahassee and Pensacola to help vulnerable people, especially those without access to heating. In addition, emergency teams are working to keep the roads clear and ensure the power supply is not severely affected by the ice.
What Temperatures Were Recorded in Miami and Orlando?
Although South Florida has not seen snow, the cold wave has still made its presence felt. In Miami, the minimum temperatures dropped to 8.3°C, while in Homestead, temperatures reached 5.5°C. This is very rare, as temperatures in South Florida are typically above 20°C.
Orlando has also experienced unusual cold, with minimum temperatures of 6.1°C and forecasts of 1.6°C in the coming days. The city is expected to experience morning frost throughout the week, and the maximum temperatures will barely exceed 13°C. This atypical weather has affected daily activities, and some homes are not prepared for such intense cold, as they typically do not need strong heating.
Record Snowfall in Panama City
One of the most affected areas has been Panama City, in Bay County, where snow reached a record-breaking 12.7 cm. City teams worked overnight using excavators to clear the main roads. The city administrator, Jonathan Hayes, urged residents to stay home due to the risk of freezing on the roads. Temperatures are expected to drop below -6°C tonight, which could worsen the situation.
How Long Will the Cold Wave Last?
The extreme cold in Florida is caused by a low-pressure system that previously affected Texas and Louisiana before reaching the state. The low temperatures and snow are expected to continue until at least Friday, when a new cold front will bring even lower temperatures. Meanwhile, the Panhandle and central Florida regions will continue to face snowfalls and freezing rain. Although the cold will be stronger in the north, even South Florida will experience subzero temperatures, which is very rare for this area.
This phenomenon has tested both the infrastructure and the state’s preparedness to handle such extreme temperatures. The residents of Florida, known for their bright sun, are now facing an entirely different climate that challenges daily life.
