Rubio expressed in a press conference in San José, Costa Rica, that if it weren’t for these three countries, there would be no migration crisis in the hemisphere. According to him, the governments in these countries are not functioning properly and have caused many people to seek refuge outside their borders.
Nicaragua: A Family Regime
Talking specifically about Nicaragua, Rubio said it has become a kind of family dynasty, with Daniel Ortega governing since 2007, now accompanied by his wife Rosario Murillo, who was designated as “co-president” in a constitutional reform. Rubio also mentioned that Ortega’s regime has tried to eliminate any kind of opposition, such as the Catholic Church, in order to maintain power.
Thousands of Nicaraguans Fleeing
According to Rubio, many people have had to flee Nicaragua due to the regime’s repression. “Thousands and thousands of Nicaraguans are fleeing from that system,” the diplomat noted.
He assured that the same is happening in Cuba and Venezuela, where people are seeking to escape the difficult conditions they face under the governments of those countries.
Costa Rica as an Example
Rubio compared the situation in these countries to Costa Rica, highlighting that in this country, there are more Americans living there than Costa Ricans living in the United States. According to him, this shows the difference between a country that gets things right and those with problematic systems like those of Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela.
Visit to Costa Rica
The U.S. Secretary of State arrived in Costa Rica on Tuesday, where he met with President Rodrigo Chaves. During his visit, they discussed important issues such as migration, security, trade, and the growing influence of China in the Central American region.
After his brief visit to Costa Rica, Rubio continued his journey to Guatemala, after starting his tour in Panama on Saturday, and will finish his trip on Thursday in the Dominican Republic.
