Pope Francis Criticizes Donald Trump’s Mass Deportations

Pope Francis expressed his concern about the immigration policy of U.S. President Donald Trump. In a letter sent to U.S. archbishops, the pontiff stated that mass deportations affect the dignity of migrants.

“The deportation of people who, in many cases, have left their homeland due to extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution, or severe environmental degradation, harms the dignity of many men and women,” wrote Francis.

Furthermore, he warned that this measure destroys families and leaves people in a vulnerable and unprotected situation.

Trump’s Immigration Policy

Donald Trump took office as President of the United States on January 20, 2025. Since his arrival, he has signed several executive orders reinforcing his hardline stance against irregular migration.

One of the key points of his administration has been the expulsion of undocumented migrants, a promise he made during his 2024 election campaign. With this strategy, Trump aims to restore some of the measures he implemented during his first term between 2017 and 2021 to restrict immigration in the country.

A Clear Message from the Pope

With this letter, Pope Francis makes his stance on the issue clear: deportations not only affect migrants but also their families and communities. His message highlights the need to address migration with a more humane and supportive approach, rather than measures that deepen the suffering of those seeking a better future.
