Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, has stated that the United States is following the example of his country in terms of deregulating the economy. He made this remark before traveling to Florida, where he will meet with the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The Argentine model, now in the U.S.
Milei claims that the strategy he implemented in Argentina, focused on reducing the size of the government and simplifying the economy, has gained so much attention that it is now being copied in the United States. “They are copying our model”, he said at a Meta event in Buenos Aires.
The Argentine president explained that the key to this approach lies in lowering taxes rather than resorting to devaluations that only worsen the economic situation for the people.
“In the United States, they’ve realized it and are copying us”, said Milei, highlighting that it is a way to achieve competitiveness without impoverishing the population.
Elon Musk and the collaboration with Sturzenegger
Milei also mentioned Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX, who was recently appointed by Trump to reorganize the U.S. government. According to Milei, Musk is in contact with his Economy Minister, Federico Sturzenegger, to discuss how to carry out the deregulation of the U.S. economy, following an approach similar to Argentina’s.
The economic adjustment of Milei in Argentina
Since taking office almost a year ago, Milei has made significant economic adjustments in Argentina. Among his measures are halving the number of ministries, halting public works, cutting subsidies, and eliminating over 32,000 public sector jobs until September, according to his own minister Sturzenegger.
The close relationship between Milei and Trump
Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni also revealed that Trump and Milei had a phone conversation in which the U.S. president allegedly told Milei: “You are my favorite president.” After Trump’s victory, Milei publicly congratulated him on his social media, showing his support. In one of his posts, he wrote:
“You know you can count on Argentina to make America great again.”
Milei does not hold back in praising both Donald Trump and Elon Musk, two key figures who, according to him, will have a strong influence on the future of the U.S. economy. For Milei, the chainsaw, his symbol of state cuts, is something he shares with Trump, who also advocates for a smaller, more efficient government.
A key meeting at Mar-A-Lago
The Argentine president will attend a conservative forum at Mar-A-Lago, Trump’s residence in Florida, at the CPAC event. This meeting will take him away from other regional leaders, such as King Felipe VI of Spain, who will meet with other Latin American presidents at the Ibero-American Summit in Ecuador.
After his visit to the United States, Milei will welcome the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, who will be in Argentina before participating in the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in mid-November.
