During an interview in the Dominican Republic, renowned singer Oscar D’ León was asked about his views on Venezuela’s political situation, his home country. However, the legendary salsa artist made it clear that he prefers to remain neutral.
“We’re not going to talk about that”
The moderator began by saying, “The situation in Venezuela, Oscar.” D’ León quickly responded: “No, no, no, no, no, we’re not going to talk about that.” His response was firm, signaling that he didn’t want to delve into the topic.
The interviewer followed up by asking if he missed the Venezuela where he grew up. The Llorarás singer replied calmly: “I love my Venezuela. I cherish it, and I wish it the best.”
Why He Chooses Silence

D’ León explained that discussing the matter could be seen as taking sides, something he prefers to avoid. “There’s a real problem, but whoever talks about it is aligning with someone, and I won’t do that,” he clarified.
Despite his neutral stance, he didn’t hide his feelings: “Do I love my Venezuela and feel hurt about many things I can’t say? Yes, it hurts. I wish Venezuela looked like Santo Domingo,” he admitted, drawing a comparison between the two countries.
A Different Perspective
While other international artists have openly denounced Venezuela’s situation—especially after Nicolás Maduro controversially swore in as president on January 10—Oscar D’ León opts to stay on the sidelines.
Though he refrains from speaking out, his words reflect a deep love for his country and a longing for improvement. As he put it: “You can’t cover the sun with one finger,” hinting that Venezuela’s reality is undeniable, even if he chooses not to discuss it publicly.
