Trump Administration Suspends “Safe Mobility” Program

The ‘Safe Mobility’ program, designed to provide legal migration options to the United States, Spain, and Canada, was suspended by the U.S. government. This mechanism had benefited people from several countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Colombia.

Official Announcement: What Does the Program Say?

On its website, the program administrators reported that ‘Safe Mobility’ is no longer active. According to the statement, no new applications will be accepted. However, it was clarified that those who already had a case referred to the United States will receive further details soon:

“You do not need to take any action at this time,” reads the notification.

Despite this clarification, there is no information on what will happen with ongoing processes to Spain and Canada or with those procedures that were still under review.

Collaboration with International Organizations

This program operated with the support of organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which facilitated the management of resettlement cases.

The “Remain in Mexico” Policy

Former President Donald Trump recently announced the reactivation of the policy known as “Remain in Mexico”, whose main goal is to limit the entry of migrants and deport those who do not have a valid reason to stay in U.S. territory.

Additionally, the administration has suspended the use of the mobile app CBP One, which allowed migrants to schedule their entry into the United States through the border ports with Mexico. According to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office, the functions of this tool have ceased to operate, and all appointments scheduled for this year were canceled.

Executive Order: Greater Border Control

Last Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order that suspends the entry of undocumented migrants through the southern border. This measure aims to protect U.S. citizens and strengthen the security of the territory.

The order also instructs several agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, to take all necessary actions to achieve this goal.
