Guantanamo Bay is known, among other things, for being the location where suspects related to the September 11 attacks are detained. Additionally, this center has been surrounded by controversy due to allegations of possible human rights violations against the detainees.
In his announcement, Trump explained that the new detention center will have capacity for 30,000 migrants. “Today, I also sign an executive order for the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparing the facility for migrants,” the president mentioned. He also emphasized that many do not know that Guantanamo Bay has this capacity.

As part of his announcement, Trump also stated that he will sign a law called the Laken Riley Act, named after a young American woman murdered by a Venezuelan migrant. This law aims to detain irregular migrants who are accused of committing crimes.
Trump ended his speech with an important message: “With today’s action, her name will live on forever in the laws of our country, and this is a very important law.”
