Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Venezuelan government has agreed to receive all undocumented Venezuelan migrants who were in the U.S. This also includes individuals identified as part of the criminal gang Tren de Aragua.
The announcement came after Richard Grenell, Trump’s special envoy, traveled to Caracas to meet with Nicolás Maduro. Following this meeting, Grenell returned with six U.S. citizens who had been detained in Venezuela.
Trump’s Message
Through his social network Truth Social, Trump celebrated the release of the Americans and revealed the agreement with Venezuela.
“It is very good to have the hostages who were in Venezuela back home, and very importantly, Venezuela has agreed to take back all illegal Venezuelan immigrants who were camping in the U.S., including members of the Tren de Aragua gang. Venezuela has also agreed to provide return transportation,” wrote the former president.
This announcement is significant because, during Joe Biden‘s presidency, Venezuela had stopped accepting repatriation flights for migrants from the U.S.
Deportations Underway
Trump, who has promised to carry out mass deportations if he returns to power, stated that his administration is in the process of expelling a record number of undocumented migrants.
“All countries have agreed to take back these illegal immigrants. Additionally, record numbers of criminals are being removed from our country, and the figures at our border are the highest since the first term of the Trump administration,” he said.
A Change in Relations with Venezuela?
The meeting between Grenell and Maduro is notable because the United States does not officially recognize Maduro’s government. Instead, Washington considers Edmundo González the legitimate leader, and he even attended Trump’s inauguration.
This rapprochement could indicate a shift in U.S. policy toward Venezuela, although it is still unclear what impact it will have in the future.
