United States Begins Mass Deportations with Four Flights to Mexico

The newly inaugurated Republican president of the United States, Donald Trump, has started his campaign against irregular migration, fulfilling the promises he made during his electoral campaign. This Friday, four planes carrying deported immigrants landed in Mexico, according to U.S. authorities.

Landings in Mexico and Guatemala

Although there were rumors that “Mexico denied access to a third U.S. military plane”, on January 25 it was confirmed that all four flights successfully arrived in Mexican territory. Additionally, officials in Guatemala reported that two military planes landed in the Central American country on the same day.

One of the planes carried 79 deportees, including 31 women and 48 men, while the other had an unspecified number of passengers.

Trump’s First Actions in His Second Term

Since being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, Donald Trump has taken drastic measures to tighten immigration policies. Among his first actions, he signed decrees that include:

  • Reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” program, which requires migrants to wait in Mexico while their immigration processes are resolved.
  • Resuming the construction of the border wall, one of his most iconic initiatives during his first term (2017-2021).

Trump also warned that he might impose a 25% tariff on Mexico if the flow of migrants crossing the southern border into the United States is not controlled.

Declaration of Emergency at the Border

On the same day as his inauguration, Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border to support the new immigration measures. These actions represent a stark contrast to the policies implemented by Joe Biden, who had prioritized a more humanitarian approach to migrants during his presidency.

With these decisions, the Trump administration aims to send a clear message that irregular migration will not be tolerated, while also escalating tensions with neighboring countries.
